The 21st Annual Summer Institute on the Holocaust and Jewish Civilization
The Holocaust Educational Foundation of Northwestern University
Evanston, Illinois, June 19 to July 1, 2016
Call for Fellows

The Holocaust Educational Foundation of Northwestern University invites applications for fellowships to participate in the 21st annual Summer Institute on the Holocaust and Jewish Civilization, from June 19 to July 1, 2016, at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. The Summer Institute is an intensive, two-week interdisciplinary course of study designed to broaden and deepen the background of current and prospective Holocaust educators. Since its founding the Institute has graduated more than 500 fellows.  It is open to faculty at the college or university level and to graduate students who intend to teach Holocaust-related courses in the future.

The Institute is ideal for those with a knowledge of one disciplinary approach to the Holocaust, but who are looking to broaden their interdisciplinary perspective. Approximately 25 Fellows are selected annually, each of whom receives free room, board, and tuition during the program. (Fellowships do not cover travel expenses to or from Evanston or the cost of assigned books.)

The Institute curriculum consists of seminars taught by leading scholars on the following themes: the religious practice and history of European Jewry; the Holocaust in art, film, and literature; Jewish responses to the Shoah; gender and the Holocaust; and recent methodological approaches to the Holocaust. Faculty for the 2016 Summer Institute will include Professors Doris Bergen, Roger Brooks, Dagmar Herzog, Paul Jaskot, Steven T. Katz, Erin McGlothlin, Brad Prager, and David Shneer.

By February 15, 2016, applicants should submit electronically:

  • A letter explaining their interest and experience in Holocaust studies
  • A curriculum vitae
  • In the case of graduate students and recent PhDs, a letter of recommendation from the principal dissertation advisor.

Applications should be submitted using the online form; letters of recommendation should be emailed with the subject line "Summer Institute 2016" to:  hef@northwestern.edu
