EHRI presented at IHRA meetings in Bucharest

Monday, 6 June, 2016

Last week, the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) held its bi-annual plenary meeting, the first under the current Romanian chairmanship. The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) is an intergovernmental body which aims to place political and social leaders’ support behind the need for Holocaust education, remembrance and research. IHRA currently has 31 member countries, ten observer countries and seven Permanent International Partners. It works with an annually rotating Chairmanship. The IHRA meetings bring together a large number of experts in research, but also in education and museum. Quite a few EHRI-colleagues are also a member of their country’s delegation to IHRA.

EHRI's identification work

In Bucharest six EHRI colleagues were participating in the meetings, and presenting some of EHRI’s activities. On Tuesday 24, May Veerle Vanden Daelen presented EHRI in the Academic Working Group together with Adina Babeş (Romania), Laszlo Csősz (Hungary) and Jan Hlavinka (Slovakia). They spoke about the challenges of EHRI’s identification work in Hungary, Slovakia and Romania and about the need for them to cooperate on the border regions.

Interview Conny Kristel

On Wednesday 25, May EHRI Project Director Conny Kristel was interviewed about EHRI by Debórah Dwork during a plenary meeting for all experts and all head of delegations. This was a good opportunity to explain the background and the mission of EHRI, including some of the aspects of the EU funding. Conny also briefly mentioned the plans for sustaining and expanding EHRI’s results after 2019.

IHRA

Last but not least, the EHRI colleagues were very interested to hear about all the IHRA projects which are clearly closely connected to EHRI’s activities. Given the partial overlap between IHRA’s and EHRI’s mission EHRI greatly values the contacts and cooperation with the IHRA For more information on the IHRA, please visit the IHRA website.
