Matt Lawson (United Kingdom), PhD candidate, Edge Hill University, “Film Music of German Holocaust cinema”.

Matt Lawson is a funded PhD candidate and Graduate Teaching Assistant from the north of England. Currently based at Edge Hill University, Matt’s ongoing PhD research focuses on the music used in German depictions of the Holocaust on screen. His research has been disseminated at conferences across the UK, and also at international events in Italy, Poland, Germany, Australia and the Netherlands.

Matt spent a total of six weeks at the Institut für Zeitgeschichte, between April and May 2014. He was able to access vital German-language historical and musicological resources both in Bavaria and further afield.

He will return to Germany in November for one month, with the assistance of a Deutsche Akademische Austauschdienst (DAAD) grant.

Although Matt is a musicologist specializing in music for film and television, he has an academic grounding in many aspects of music theory, history and analysis. Having completed his undergraduate honours degree in Music at Huddersfield in 2009, Matt has since gained an MA with distinction from the University of York (2012).
