On August 22, 2013, Conny Kristel, Project Director of EHRI, gives a presentation about the EHRI project as part of the course 'Introduction to Holocaust and Genocide Studies' of the Helsinki Summer School. She will speak about what EHRI entails and explain how Holocaust researchers will greatly benefit from this project.

The Helsinki Summer School course introduces students to the field of international Holocaust and Genocide Studies, hosting respected senior scholars such as Wichert ten Have and Conny Kristel from the Dutch Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies, and foresinc scientist Helena Ranta from the University of Helsinki. The course also gives an excellant opportunity for advanced students' and junior researchers' to discuss their own fields of interest.

Excursion into the Baltic region

While Finland remained largely outside the area where Nazi atrocities were put into effect during the Second World War, the Holocaust did unfold in territories very close to Finland and in areas of age-old Finnish links and interests. The summer school programme therefore includes an excursion into the Baltic region to raise the students' awareness of nearby areas for comparison.

Dutch-Nordic Network

The course leaders (Dr Malte Gasche, Dr Simo Muir and Dr Oula Silvennoinen) have previously co-operated with the Dutch-Nordic Network for Holocaust and Genocide Studies in launching systematic research into Holocaust and Genocide Studies in Finland. They have recently initiated co-operation between the Department of World Cultures and the Centre for Nordic Studies and the Dutch-Nordic Network for Holocaust and Genocide Studies and Mémorial de la Shoah in Paris.
