Tobias Blanke

Tobias Blanke is a Senior Lecturer in the Centre for e-Research, Department of Digital Humanities at King's College London. For EHRI, he is a member of the Executive Team. Tobias' academic background is in philosophy and computer science. Tobias is currently the director of the MA in Digital Asset and Media Management, a worldwide unique degree bringing together computational and information science perspectives to understand the development of digital assets in the content industries. Before joining King’s, he has held various lead development and analyst positions in the digital industries, from small-scale media companies to an adventure as a data warehouse analyst at a multi-national investment bank.

Tobias can look back to over 10 years of leadership in research and development projects. Tobias has been leading on several projects in the computational analytics, from network analysis, open linked data, scholarly primitives to document mining and information extraction for research. His particular expertise is text mining and information retrieval on heterogeneous textual collections. Tobias holds a PhD from the worldwide renowned University of Glasgow Information Retrieval Group on Semantic Logic for Information Retrieval with the supervisors Prof Mounia Lalmas (now Yahoo!Research) and Prof Keith van Rijsbergen (retired and Microsoft Research, Cambridge). His text analysis work is extensively published and has won a best paper award and a runners-up best paper in international conferences.

Tobias works on several international projects and committees. Most notably, he is one of the directors of the Digital Research Infrastructure for Arts and Humanities (DARIAH), a European ESFRI project to create an integrated research infrastructure for digital arts and humanities, a key initiative for the upcoming Horizon 2020 framework and shared between 15 European countries.
