Seminar description

The German Federal Archives are partner in the transnational project EHRI (European Holocaust Research Infrastructure). EHRI is dedicated to improve the European infrastructure for Holocaust studies by facilitating access to archival collections related to Holocaust history and by stimulating innovative, interdisciplinary and transnational research. Conferences, methodological seminars and workshops play a major role in achieving an exchange of knowledge and establishing institutional as well as personal networks.

In the framework of EHRI, the Federal Archives offer a five-day archival seminar under the title “Modern Diplomatics of the Holocaust” (see also the EHRI Online Course Modern Diplomatics of the Holocaust). It aims at giving a thorough introduction into the handling of German records related to the Holocaust. The intended audience especially includes archival staff members (particularly from Central, Southern and Eastern Europe), Holocaust researchers and employees of museums and memorial sites who work with German archival records and would like to enlarge their knowledge on archival sources.

The seminar will focus on German language Holocaust-related documents from various provenances. They will be analysed and interpreted according to source-oriented methods in order to understand them in the context of their genesis and to acquire a solid knowledge in decision making structures. As all sources and a significant part of the lectures will be in German, good (passive) knowledge of this language is a precondition for attendance; English will serve as the second language of instruction. Besides paper files other source categories such as maps, pictures and films will be reviewed as well. Central topics discussed at the seminar will include:

• Archival science and analysis of the course of business
• Practical classification of sources: from ministry records to person related file indexes (NSDAP-card index) and private papers till records of justice
• Photos and pictures of the Holocaust
• German administrative history and bureaucratic structures in the Nazi era
• Presentation of relevant collections and research opportunities in the Federal Archives,

Moreover, visits to several memorial sites in Berlin (House of the Wannsee conference, Topography of terror, Holocaust memorial) are planned.

Practical information

The archival seminar “Modern Diplomatics of the Holocaust” will take place 10-15 September 2023 at the Berlin-Lichterfelde branch of the Federal Archives. We would like to invite all interested candidates to hand in their application until 31 May 2023. Travel expenses, accommodation and half board will be supplied for by EHRI (subject to budget limitations).

Aufruf zur Bewerbung für das Seminar Aktenkunde des Holocausts 

Vorstellung des Seminars

Das Bundesarchiv ist Partner im transnationalen Projekt EHRI (European Holocaust Research Infrastructure). EHRI hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, die europäische Infrastruktur zur Erforschung des Holocausts zu verbessern, indem der Zugang zu holocaustrelevantem Archivmaterial erleichtert und innovative, interdisziplinäre und transnationale Forschung angeregt wird. Eine wichtige Rolle bei Wissensaustausch und institutioneller wie personeller Vernetzung spielen dabei Tagungen, Methodische Seminare und Workshops.

Im Rahmen dieses Projekts bietet das Bundesarchiv ein fünftägiges Archivseminar mit dem Titel "Aktenkunde des Holocausts“ (siehe ach EHRI Online-Kurs Modern Diplomatics of the Holocaust) an, das eine vertiefte Einführung in den Umgang mit deutschen Unterlagen mit Bezug zum Holocaust geben möchte. Es richtet sich insbesondere an Archivarinnen und Archivare aus Mittel-, Süd- und Osteuropa, an Holocaust-Forscherinnen und -Forscher sowie in Museen, Gedenkstätten oder Dokumentationszentren tätige Multiplikatorinnen und Multiplikatoren, die mit deutschem Archivgut arbeiten und ihr quellenkundliches Wissen erweitern wollen.

Im Zentrum des Seminars werden deutschsprachige Dokumente mit Holocaustbezug aus unterschiedlichsten Provenienzen stehen, die nach quellenkundlichen Methoden analysiert und interpretiert werden, um sie aus ihrem Entstehungszusammenhang heraus zu verstehen und zu soliden Erkenntnissen über Entscheidungsstrukturen zu gelangen. Da alle Quellen und ein erheblicher Teil der Vorträge in deutscher Sprache sein werden, sind gute passive Deutschkenntnisse Voraussetzung für die Teilnahme; Englisch wird zweite Unterrichtssprache sein. Neben Unterlagen aus Akten werden auch weitere Quellengattungen wie Karteien, Fotos oder Filme thematisiert. Zu den zentralen Seminarinhalten gehören:

• Archivische Aktenkunde und Geschäftsganganalyse
• Praktische Quellentypologie: vom Ministerialschriftgut über personenbezogene Karteien (NSDAP-Kartei) und Nachlässe bis zu Strafverfolgungsakten
• Fotos und Bilder des Holocausts
• Deutsche Verwaltungsgeschichte und -struktur in der NS-Zeit
• Vorstellung thematisch relevanter Bestände und Recherchemöglichkeiten im Bundesarchiv

Außerdem sind Exkursionen zu verschiedenen Gedenkstätten in Berlin (Haus der Wannsee-Konferenz, Topographie des Terrors, Holocaust-Mahnmal) vorgesehen.

Das Archivseminar Aktenkunde des Holocausts wird vom 10. bis 15. September 2023 beim Bundesarchiv am Standort in Berlin-Lichterfelde stattfinden. Wir möchten alle Interessierten auffordern, sich bei uns bis zum 31.05.2023 zu bewerben. Die Kosten für An- und Abreise, Unterbringung und ein Teil der Verpflegung werden von EHRI (bis zu bestimmten Obergrenzen) übernommen.
